Sandbox Beach Club, Montenegro
Sandbox beach club is situated in the middle of Velika plaza (long beach). A 13km long beach on the emerald green Adriatic.
Sandbox Beach Club is one of several kite/beach clubs which run down Velika Plaza and offers kiteboarding lessons, rentals, food and drink. The biggest difference between Sandbox and other kiteclubs I’ve visited worldwide is Sandbox’s legendary ability to Party. As the sun goes down the party really starts. Be warned of the Rakia! – It flows readily for any occasion, sickness, health, because its windy, if its cold or just because.
During high season there will be a party to be found somewhere on Velika Plaza and if not you can be sure the Sandbox Crew will get one started. Sometimes they even turn into full on raves. Luckily the wind blows in the afternoon so you’ll have chance to recover and repeat it all the next day.
The winds kick in during the afternoon almost daily during the summer peak season of June, July and August. Starting in the afternoon as soon as the Albanian Alps heat up. The wind is usually side – side-onshore. Leaving waters that are relatively calm with a small chop. The tides are insignificant in Montenegro, so you can kite whenever the wind blows.
Whilst we were there, when the wind blew I would typically be using a 10-13m kite and Cathy a 9-12m. The water is busy in peak season but only for the first 50m or so. Beyond 50m from the shore and you’ll have all the space in the world. Watch out for beginners and swimmers close to the shore line especially if the wind is a bit lighter than normal. Expect a little carnage on the beach but it’s nothing compared to Tarifa.
5 minutes further down the beach towards Albania you will find some beautiful flat water inside the mouth of the River Bojana. You can easily downwind to it and enjoy a beer in one of the restaurants on the river, but riding back upwind can be a long hike if the wind is dropping. Keep your eyes peeled for nudists on the island Ada Bojana.
The flat water is world class but can fill up fast. I don’t know about the legality of it but when we were there I also ventured down to the river mouth at the far end of the island. Technically kiting in Albania but it had more space and a really glass flat lagoon. Probably best to check with the locals about that spot tho 😉
Accomodation is usually in near by Stoj or Ulcinj. We stayed at the Sandbox house which had spacious rooms and a couple of kitchens. Best of all was the atmosphere in the house. Good vibes 🙂 The sandbox house is situated a 5 min walk from the centre of Stoj where you can find bars and food. Other apartments can be found nearby fairly cheaply.
5 minutes down the road you’ll find some very nice local restaurants right on the River Bojana. Some of the best food I ate in MN was in these restaurants. You must try the seafood or even the carp. Carp in MN is spelt Krap. Making it the only place in the world where I literally ordered Krap from the menu.
You should really hire a car and get out in the mornings if you’re not too hung-over. Head to the hills, lake Skadar or take a trip to Kotor and its walled city. Montenegro is a truly stunning place with a welcoming vibe.
